Nelson Mandela's successor is providing vital help to the illiberal and undemocratic regime in Zimbabwe.

To acknowledge that Nyerere was better than most African leaders of his generation amounts to only modest praise. His record was a decidedly mixed one.

For however delightful and heroic a man Mandela is, and no matter how utterly justified his movement's struggle has been, one should not be blinded to the problems with his party.
