Instead, in 1958, Australia began operating the ten-megawatt High Flux Australian Reactor (HIFAR) in the Sydney suburb of Lucas Heights. HIFAR was replaced in 2007 by the twenty-megawatt Open-pool Australian Lightwater (OPAL) research reactor involved in producing medical radioisotopes and conducting other research activities.
