Bang: Why the Kel-Tec SU-16 is a Must Have Rifle

This weapon is a rare find so you should take advantage when you're able to pick one up.

Whether you are out camping, doing some long backpacking or any other situation that involves wilderness, you may find yourself in a situation that calls for survival hunting. The Kel-Tec SU-16 is the perfect firearm for you to protect yourself in whichever given situation. Not only is this rifle great for protection, but it is also a fun rifle to do some shooting with.

Kel-Tec is a very innovative company that makes some remarkably interesting, if not obscure products. However, they do not seem to be able to produce them in sufficient numbers. Thus, there is generally a lack of firearms by them, which makes it a little complicated to find them. Which is why, if you come across one of these beauties, you must get one! Let us go over its amazing features for you to get to know it a little better.

Accuracy

The accuracy of this rifle is really good. Its sights are easy to see and quickly adjustable. The rifle is rather easy to keep on target and offers you a unique feel to it. At about 1.5MOA, and with the TRS 25 Red Dot sighted at 50/200 you can hit an 8×10 steel target every time from 100-200 yards off a rest, and about 8/10 at 300 with 12” holdover. The unique forend that doubles as a bipod is an incredible feature that aids the accuracy of the rifle.

Reliability

SU-16 rifles have proven to be reliable systems that work quite well. Although the rifle can be considered exceptionally reliable, the Kel-Tec SU-16 does have some limits to the rifle. The gun does heat up due to the light barrel and does start to fail-to-eject (FTE) cartridges during “mag dumps.” If the rifle is cleaned after each use it does help with the FTE problem but does not go away entirely.

Handling

The handling on this rifle is excellent and easy. It is designed for easy mounting of scopes or optics of any kind without drilling or tapping required. Furthermore, these quick detachable scopes and optics are an ideal feature in any survival rifle, allowing the shooter to retain his original sights in the event the optics or scope fails.

Trigger

The trigger pull on this rifle can be considered to be average for a semi-automatic rifle at six pounds. All the SU models hold a six pound trigger pull. The hinged trigger group housing, trigger guard and hollow shoulder stock are all part of a single unit which is fitted with a textured rubber recoil pad. A steel cross bolt safety button is located above and behind the bow shaped polymer trigger.

Magazine & Reloading

All the SU models support the same ten round or more magazines. The magazines are interchangeable with AR magazines, and the gun has a place in the buttstock for two spare ten round magazines. The reloading of this rifle is easy and quick to do. You will be back to shooting in no time.

Length & Weight

The Kel-Tec SU-16 is an incredibly light rifle, making it easy to carry it all day while hunting. Before loading the rifle, the weight comes to five pounds, the variety of SU-16s range between 4.5-5 pounds unloaded. The overall and folded length of this rifle varies in each of the models. The size of the barrels also varies depending on the SU model.

Recoil Management

The rifle has light recoil and the stock shoulders well. You can easily absorb the recoil, making it a well-suited firearm for a woman rather than a shotgun or a heavier rifle; especially given any survival situations. The light recoil can be an appreciated feature by folks who are recoil sensitive.

Price

Prices for the Kel-Tec SU-16 ranges between $700-900, depending on the model you buy.

My Verdict?

The Kel-Tec SU-16 rifle is light and uses a good, all-around intermediate cartridge which is easily obtained and a joy to shoot. This rifle is a fun and smooth firearm to shoot and use in a sport utility context. It is also incredibly handy in survival situations if needed. If you have not fallen in love with this rifle yet, give the SU-16 a try and you will absolutely love it. It is certainly worth the buy.
