4 Facts You Need to Know: The British military is set to introduce the Challenger 3, Rheinmetall’s latest main battle tank, poised to become NATO’s most advanced armored vehicle. Unveiled recently, the Challenger 3 features a new 120 mm smoothbore L55A1CR3 cannon, upgraded modular armor, and advanced sensors, enhancing both firepower and protection.
-Weighing sixty-six tons, it is significantly heavier yet remains agile with a top speed of thirty-seven miles per hour.
-Scheduled for initial operating capability by 2027 and full deployment by 2030, only 148 units will be upgraded.
-Despite its limited numbers, the Challenger 3 aims to bolster the British Army’s modernization alongside new infantry fighting and armored personnel vehicles, addressing lessons learned from the extensive tank warfare in Ukraine.
The Challenger 3, the new tank of the British military, is coming soon.
Unveiled just recently, the Challenger 3 is a steel behemoth designed to take on Russian tanks.
Manufactured by Rheinmetall, the Challenger 3 could very well become the most advanced main battle tank in NATO.

The new version of the venerable Challenger tank will pack a new 120 mm smoothbore main gun, upgraded modular armor, and modern sensors.
“I am proud that the product of RBSL’s capability is being showcased on DVD, supporting the event’s theme of ‘Working together to pull the future into the present,” RBSL Managing Director Will Gibby said in a press statement.
When it comes to weight, the Challenger 3 will come in at approximately sixty-six tons, about three and a half tons heavier than its predecessor. This is quite a heavy vehicle and almost twenty tons heavier than the latest operational Russian tanks like the T-90M. But that has to do with a design philosophy.
Western tanks like the M1 Abrams, Challenger, Leclerc, and Leopard are heavier than Russian tanks and can withstand more punishment on the battlefield. But besides its heavy weight, the Challenger 3 is expected to be quite fast and mobile too, with a top speed of thirty-seven miles per hour, or around sixty kilometers.
When it comes to the main gun, the Challenger 3 will pack a new L55A1CR3 120 mm smoothbore cannon, which can fire conventional, armor-piercing, and high-explosive rounds.
The program is projected to reach initial operating capability by 2027, and all tanks are planned to be in service with frontline units by the end of 2030.
“The RBSL team is making great strides, with Challenger 3 completing successful non-destructive testing and further capability trials are to come,” Gibby stated.
“Not only has RBSL produced the most advanced and capable Main Battle Tank in NATO, but the development capability to deliver this program, including the people, process, tools, facilities, and knowledge, are the building blocks needed to tailor new customer solutions. We look forward to RBSL helping shape the future of military vehicle design and production with international allies,” the Rheinmetall official added.
However, the number of tanks is quite small. Rheinmetall will upgrade a total of 148 tanks to Challenger 3. As shown by the fighting in Ukraine, the main battle tanks are very much still in the game. Former British Prime Minister famously quipped that the days of the tank were numbered only a few months before Russian armor rolled through Ukraine’s borders.
However, almost 1,000 days of fighting in Ukraine have shown that that is not the case. Both combatants use tanks extensively for both offensive and defensive operations. The Russian military has lost anywhere from 3,000 to 8,000 tanks in the fighting, while the Ukrainian casualties are probably in the hundreds. To be competitive, the U.K. military simply needs more tanks.
The British Army is modernizing its entire mechanized forces and is adding the Ajax infantry fighting vehicle and Boxer armored personnel carrier alongside the Challenger 3 tank.
