Foam inserts — Avoid any gun cabinets using foam inserts as cushioning. Foam tends to absorb and hold moisture and promotes rust.

Materials — Beware of terms like “all wood” or “real wood.” Composite material made from sawdust and glue is still technically considered wood. Look for the words “solid wood,” but read carefully. Some manufacturers use a sawdust composite then put on a thin layer of solid wood called Solid Wood Veneer.

Door — Make sure the door swings evenly and closes snugly.

Lock — Test the lock. The mechanism should feel smooth and solid.

Drawers — if there are drawers, make sure they open and close without sticking.

Remember, regardless of which you choose, the important things are doing the research and asking the right questions.
