The EU’s Carbon Tariff Doesn’t Work for the Rest of the World

The EU would do well to adjust its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which has riled developed and developing countries alike, lest it risk exacerbating geopolitical tensions and reducing its diplomatic standing.

Dr. Gautam Jain is a senior research scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University. He focuses on the role of financial markets and instruments, including thematic bonds and carbon markets, in the energy transition, particularly in emerging economies. Dr. Jain has an extensive background in the financial industry, where he worked at asset management firms and an investment bank covering emerging markets as a portfolio manager and strategist. He holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Columbia.
