Russia's Sputnik V Vaccine: How Latin America Will Protect Itself from Coronavirus?

Russia understands the value of soft power, and wields it appropriately, at least in the context of global health. Meanwhile, America is falling behind because it has been flying Donald Trump’s tattered banner of “America First.”

That said, Russia understands the value of soft power, and wields it appropriately, at least in the context of global health. Despite its floundering health system, Russia has managed to present compelling alternatives to both the liberal international order and the doctrine of “America First.” When Latin American nations make decisions about whose lead they want to follow, they will have a choice between a perceived bully and a perceived friend. Does your coronavirus vaccine say Moderna, Pfizer, or “From Russia, with love”? Irrespective of intention, this perception will dictate the country that Latin Americans will choose as a trusted partner.
